I did not think of that. I can probably switch the rear brakes to Redline brakes next time I need to mess with them.

I stopped just short of the rear drum brakes on this today. Settled the rest of the bikes issues and I wasn’t ready to tackle another old drum brake set up yet. The last bike I restored needed all of  the parts replaced. Fortunately the front drum brakes work fine.

Are they not self-adjusting? Can’t just drive in reverse then hit the brakes?

They were not self adjusting. The car was stuck and the emergency brake was not even on. I had to wait until it was above freezing and not a wind storm tornado war ning. I could not get the brake to release. I pulled the drum off with a 7 ton puller and reset it with the drum off.

Gotcha, locked drums are the worst.

I hate drums so much that if I ever own another car with them, I’ll do a disc conversion when the shoes need replacement.
